Ekweremadu nominated for deputy senate president

Former deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu has been nominated for for the position of senate president as the elections in the 9th senate commences.

The nomination of Ekweremadu who represents Enugu West came as a surprise. He however vowed to work with the new Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege had earlier been nominated for the position

Few minutes ago, we reported that Senator Ahmad Lawan has emerged the new Senate President to lead the 9th Senate Senate .

This was after an election that saw him defeat his rival Ali Ndume.

Ahmad Lawan got 79 votes while Ali Ndume got 28. The voting took place today at the National Assembly with all stakeholders gathered.

Ahmad Lawan emerged the new Senate President despite endorsement of Ali Ndume from the opposition party the PDP. If Ekweremadu emerges his deputy, this will mean a big win for the opposition PDP.

Ike Ekweremadu was been declared winner of the Enugu West Senatorial district in February, returning to the senate for the 5th time.

Ike Ekweremadu, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the National Assembly elections, polled 86,088 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mrs Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 15,187 votes.

The results were announced on a Sunday by Returning Officer, Prof Douglas Nwagbo of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
Reacting to the development, Ekweradu stated that he was humbled by the result which makes it the first time a senator would be voted the 5th time in Nigeria.

He applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the election which he says was smooth and peacefully conducted.
